Abstract:

Puerperal anemia is a sub-class of iron deficiency that occurs within 3weeks of delivery. postpartum haemorrhage may lead to maternal morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intravenous iron sucrose in treatment of puerperal anemia. This is a prospective observational study where patients with haemoglobin levels less than 10g/dl were grouped and intravenous iron sucrose is th th administered to them for 3 alternative days. The haemoglobin levels on 15th and 30th dayof follow-up were compared with the base line. A total of 15 patients received intravenous sucrose where initial and final average haemoglobin levels were found to be 7.27±0.67 g/dl to 10.8±0.36 g/dl. The base line Hb level increased by 2.53±0.42 g/dl. The results were analysed by paired student 't' test and difference was found to be statistically significant. The use of intravenous iron sucrose in treatment of puerperal anemia was found to be effective where there is a rapid increase in haemoglobin level.
